Tatranská Lomnica skiing
The closest major ski base, with cable cars, rentals and terrain for different levels. Snow, wind and lift status change daily.
A practical guide from Stará Lesná
What to do in winter, what is better on a warm dry day, where to soak after a hike, and where to eat, buy groceries or find a good glass of wine — all from Apartments Piknik.
Close to Apartments Piknik
The most useful split is winter, spring–autumn and all year. “All year” still means checking weather, maintenance and the day’s operating status before leaving.
This is an open alpine coaster, not a winter activity bundle. It is close enough for a spontaneous ride from Apartments Piknik, but wind, rain and maintenance can change operation. Check the operator’s current information before going.

The closest major ski base, with cable cars, rentals and terrain for different levels. Snow, wind and lift status change daily.
Ride the funicular from Starý Smokovec, then use the 2.5 km sledge track when snow and track conditions allow. Day and selected night sessions are offered in season.
A cable-car day beginning in Tatranská Lomnica. Tickets to the summit are limited; wind and technical pauses can affect the upper section.
The funicular makes Hrebienok an easy starting point. The lower educational circuit and waterfall area work well for a lighter mountain day; winter needs suitable footwear.
A barrier-free gondola option leads to a 1,234 m forest walkway and 32 m observation tower. Spring and autumn maintenance may interrupt operation.
A 27-hole resort in Veľká Lomnica with open views towards the Tatras. A good non-hiking option in settled weather.
Official mountain-resort updates
For special events, we recommend checking VT.sk shortly before your stay. It is the resort’s official source for programmes such as Dinner under the Stars, Venetian Night, Bear Days, summit breakfasts and seasonal exhibitions.
The cards below are refreshed from VT.sk on the server. Open the official event page to confirm the date, weather restrictions, capacity and ticket availability before travelling.

Official Visit Tatry widget · “Dátum od/do” = date from/to, “Dnes” = today, “Tento týždeň” = this week, “Vyhľadať podujatia” = search events.
Why there are two official sources: VT.sk covers events published by the mountain resort. The Visit Tatry calendar also includes independent cultural, food, family and town events. For example, the Tatra Wine Festival has its own official website, so it is not presented as VT.sk content.
Water, caves and bigger days out
Driving times below are planning estimates from Apartments Piknik, not promises. Traffic, border queues, winter roads and parking can add time.
The easiest full water-park day from Stará Lesná: thermal and salt-water pools, slides, wellness and indoor options.
A more straightforward thermal-bathing choice than a large aquapark, useful after skiing or hiking.
The nearest major show cave. Allow extra time for the uphill approach from Tatranská Kotlina and check tour times before departure.
A UNESCO-listed ice cave and a natural pairing with Slovak Paradise. The cave is seasonal, cold inside and reached by a 1 km uphill path.
Gorges, ladders, waterfalls and forest routes make this a full active day. Choose the trail for the group’s fitness and check conditions after rain.
A scenic lake circuit, mountain views, cafés and seasonal sport. It is also reachable by the Tatra Electric Railway with a change at Starý Smokovec.
A large year-round water park with indoor Tropical Paradise. Combine it with Liptovský Mikuláš or Liptovská Mara when making the longer drive west.
Thermal pools, wellness and year-round water slides. Worth considering for a dedicated recovery day, but it is not a nearby stop.
Slovakia’s broadest single-resort ski offer. It is a serious day trip from Stará Lesná, not an alternative to the much closer Tatranská Lomnica for a quick ski.
A lively Polish mountain town for markets, architecture, food and a change of scene. Carry travel documents and allow for border and traffic delays.
