A practical guide from Stará Lesná

The High Tatras, planned properly

What to do in winter, what is better on a warm dry day, where to soak after a hike, and where to eat, buy groceries or find a good glass of wine — all from Apartments Piknik.

Start with the season

The most useful split is winter, spring–autumn and all year. “All year” still means checking weather, maintenance and the day’s operating status before leaving.

Our rule of thumb: use Tatra Bob for warm, dry days; keep skiing and Hrebienok sledging in the winter list; save thermal pools, museums and selected caves for wet or recovery days.

Spring–autumn3.2 km

Tatra Bob is its own plan

This is an open alpine coaster, not a winter activity bundle. It is close enough for a spontaneous ride from Apartments Piknik, but wind, rain and maintenance can change operation. Check the operator’s current information before going.

Winter2.5 km

Tatranská Lomnica skiing

The closest major ski base, with cable cars, rentals and terrain for different levels. Snow, wind and lift status change daily.

Winterabout 12 min

Hrebienok sledging

Ride the funicular from Starý Smokovec, then use the 2.5 km sledge track when snow and track conditions allow. Day and selected night sessions are offered in season.

All year*2.5 km

Skalnaté pleso & Lomnický štít

A cable-car day beginning in Tatranská Lomnica. Tickets to the summit are limited; wind and technical pauses can affect the upper section.

All year*about 12 min

Hrebienok & Cold Creek waterfalls

The funicular makes Hrebienok an easy starting point. The lower educational circuit and waterfall area work well for a lighter mountain day; winter needs suitable footwear.

All year*about 25 min

Bachledka Treetop Walk

A barrier-free gondola option leads to a 1,234 m forest walkway and 32 m observation tower. Spring and autumn maintenance may interrupt operation.

Spring–autumn5 km

Black Stork golf

A 27-hole resort in Veľká Lomnica with open views towards the Tatras. A good non-hiking option in settled weather.

Why there are two official sources: VT.sk covers events published by the mountain resort. The Visit Tatry calendar also includes independent cultural, food, family and town events. For example, the Tatra Wine Festival has its own official website, so it is not presented as VT.sk content.

Ideas for your stay

Not every Tatra trip needs a packed itinerary

Apartments Piknik can be a practical base for a large family or group, but it also works naturally for two people who want mountain access and a quieter private space.

Private balcony with flowers and a High Tatras mountain view

For couples

A quiet romantic weekend in the High Tatras

Mountain views, private breakfasts, slow evenings and enough distance from city traffic to switch off — without losing convenient access to Tatranská Lomnica, restaurants and the electric railway.

Cook local in your apartment

Four Slovak dishes to make in your apartment

Every Apartments Piknik kitchen has the basics you need. These are holiday-friendly versions rather than restaurant projects: short ingredient lists, one pan or one pot, and products available in Slovak groceries.

Slovak mountain cooking is traditionally built around potatoes, cabbage and sheep-milk products such as bryndza, oštiepok and parenica. Read more from Slovakia Travel. Allergy note: the recipes above contain milk; halušky and bread may contain gluten, and bacon is optional.

Stay close to the Tatras, not inside the crowds

Use quiet Stará Lesná as your base, cook when you want to, and choose a different mountain, thermal or food day each morning.
